Now that you’ve joined, what are the next steps? Here are some basic tips:
<b>1.</b> You can upload your photo (It helps networking, and it helps to “put a name to a face”). Go to "<a href=”www.hypertope.com/user”>My account</a>" >> "EDIT"
<b>2.</b> You can <a href=”www.hypertope.com/invite”>invite your academic contacts</a>. As a general policy we kindly ask that each new member invites at least 2 other persons from their department or research field. This way every new person who joins is automatically connected with the rest of the academic community.
<b>3.</b> You can find people in your university, department, discipline or particular research interest keywords by clicking on the relevant fields on <a href=”www.hypertope.com/user”>your own profile page</a>.
For a more detailed search click on “<a href=”http://hypertope.com/directory_people”>People</a>” and use a <i>combination</i> of filters simultaneously to narrow down the displayed results. If you already know some of the people, you can add them to your contacts by clicking “<i>Add to my contacts</i>” link at the bottom of their profile page. If you don't find people you know, then why not <a href=”www.hypertope.com/invite”>invite</a> them?
<b>4. </b> “About me” is the section where you can write about yourself and your current research (just go to "<a href=”www.hypertope.com/user”>My Account</a>" and click the "<b>About me</b>" tab, and don’t forget to hit the “<b>Submit</b>” button once you change the default text)
[your profile page functions not only like your "staff page", but also as your flexible academic e-business-card where you can change any of its fields whenever you need]
<b>5. </b> You can view and <i>categorize</i> your contacts by going to "<a href=”http://hypertope.com/connections”>My contacts</a>"
<b>6.</b> You can <a href=”http://hypertope.com/node/add/group”>start your own group</a> and invite others to join it. Usually, this is the most dynamic way of keeping track of new developments within one's research area.
<b>7.</b> If you have a <a href=”http://hypertope.com/callsforpapers”>Call for Papers</a> or an <a href=”http://hypertope.com/event”>Upcoming Event</a> (conference, workshop, guest talk, etc) that you wish to announce and publicize you can post them <a href=”http://hypertope.com/node/add/callforpapers”>here</a> and <a href=”http://hypertope.com/node/add/event”>here</a> respectively. You can also promote your Events using RSVP invitations.
<b>8. </b> You can promote your publications by placing them in the <a href=”http://hypertope.com/biblio”>Biblio Repository</a>. You can then linking to them when you list your publications on <a href=” http://hypertope.com/user”>your profile page</a>. Biblio Repository is also an easy way to dynamically share and recommend bibliographic data among your colleagues.
<b>9. </b> This area is <a href=” http://hypertope.com/privatemsg/inbox”>your Inbox</a>, where you can <a href=” http://hypertope.com/privatemsg/new”>send</a> and receive private messages. However, this is not the same as clicking the "<a href=” http://hypertope.com/user/2/contact”>E-mail</a>" tab on a particular <a href=” http://hypertope.com/superadmin/info”>user's profile page</a>, through which you can <a href=” http://hypertope.com/user/2/contact”>send a direct e-mail to him/her from within hypertope</a>. That e-mailing feature is a very useful way of keeping contact with your distant colleagues and the people that you meet at conferences, without the need to keep track of their ever-changing e-mail addresses while they move between universities.
