In January 2009 I will commence working on my Masters thesis in the The Australian Centre of Philanthropic and Non-Profit Studies (CPNS) at QUT. While the centre is located in Brisbane, Queensland I will be basing myself out of Melbourne, Victoria.
Thesis Topic:
An examination of the cultural and systems barriers that influence the giving of philanthropic foundations to Health and Medical Research.
Area of research:
The thesis will look specifically at the following areas:
• Governance and management arrangements within established philanthropic foundations and how these arrangements influence choices about what causes to support and the implications of these arrangements for health and medical research (HMR);
• Identification of the social and economic factors that promote philanthropic giving, with a particular focus on HMR, and barriers to giving for HMR;
• Issues that influence philanthropic decision making as it relates to HMR;
• Identification of mechanisms developed internationally that have supported the development of philanthropic giving to HMR that could be adapted in the Australian context.
